Election Day After: Three Pastoral Requests

Dear Elim Grace,

This coming Tuesday, November 5th, is Election Day. I hope you and I will not be part of the suggested 31 million Christians who do not plan to vote.

Vote.

But then, the day after, on Wednesday, November 6th,  I urge you as your pastor to consider doing three things.

First, consider not posting at all on social media or, at a minimum, not posting anything related to the election. Rather, commit that day to prayer. Submit your will to the will of Jesus and whatever the election results may be. Those results, whether they bring us joy or disappointment, are under the sovereignty of Jesus who is King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Commit yourself to His power and authority, to His wisdom and love. Give thanks and rejoice that His Word will never fail, that His promises are always “yes and amen,” that His Kingdom will know no end and that His church will stand and endure no matter what. Worship Him. Sing Him a song and lift your hands. He is worthy to be praised and adored in every personal and political context of our lives.

Second, consider your leaders’ social media behavior. Specifically, the elders of Elim Grace. Consider that all of them post little to nothing politically online. They have strong political opinions which are not a secret to many of you, but they choose to share and to discuss and to take a stand on those convictions in ways other than on social media. I hope their faith as evidenced in their works/actions online make an impact on you and give you a model to follow on November 6th. Their’s is a faith worth imitating.

Third, encourage one another to do the things above. As I wrote you yesterday, we die spiritually when we cease to see the face of Jesus and to hear His voice. His presence is life! Yet an important aspect to our life in Jesus is our life in the body of Jesus. Being and staying connected or rooted to one another in fellowship. We worship Jesus together because together is how we grow BIG in Christ. So exhort one another to stay the course. To stay on the ship. To run the race set before us. Remind one another that God who began a good work in us, His church and bride, will complete it on the day of His return.
