Out of all the “appointed days” of sabbaths and holy convocations that God provided to Israel, one stands apart. Only on Yom Kippur, or the Day of Atonement, did God command his people to fast and stay home. No one was allowed into the tabernacle (or the temple later on). Why was this day different? What is atonement? What does it have to do with us?
