For Leaders: August Growth Resource

Every month Pastor Jonathan sends out a leadership growth resource email to our
church leadership.

If you’re in leadership of any kind, our aim is to help resource you as well. So here’s our August resource. We hope you’ll find something useful to you and to your leadership.

Taking the time to watch/listen to one and the same podcast together is our
Elim Grace leadership discipline for 2019.

“No matter the size of the organization you serve or lead, there are places and times where decisions get bogged down and progress is slowed. That delay is called slack. Don’t worry. Slack happens to the best leaders and builds up in even the most efficient organizations over time. When it happens, it’s important to know how to recognize what’s slowing you down and cut the slack.”

A leadership BOOK that’s challenging me:

“Do/Scale: A Road Map to Growing a Remarkable Company” by Les McKeown. The “sleep-inducing secret” to scaling is “high-quality team-based decision-making”. The key here is finding people who can make decisions not primarily in their best interests, but in the best interests of the organization as a whole.

A leadership PRINCIPLE I’m applying:

When you get a critical email, a critical comment, a critical text or phone call, don’t respond for 24 hours. Just don’t.

This saves me (1) from reacting emotionally and responding harshly or rashly to my critic and (2) from likely missing the element of truth that is present in all criticism.

A leadership THOUGHT I’m pondering:

“I resolved that I would permit no man, no matter what his color might be, to narrow and degrade my soul by making me hate him.”
Booker T. Washington

While this is a comment on racism, it’s also a commentary on the power of hatred to corrupt and destroy anyone who cannot forgive those who have hurt him or her.

One KEY THING I think God is saying to us:

I continue to hear God speak that He wants us to“learn to pray”. If we think we know how to already, we will miss some key lessons for the coming months and years.
