In silence we ask the question whose voice matters most. In solitude whose eyes. In stillness we ask whose activity matters most.
One of the first things we want to know about someone is, “What do you do?”. Why? Because we largely have come to assess a person’s value and worth on the basis of their accomplishments. And we feel this pressure, too, and try to measure up. But in stillness we stop. We cease from our activity.
Yet we must do more than cease from our work. We must also come to learn to rest in God’s work.
