In silence we answer the question, whose voice matter most. In solitude we answer the question, whose eyes matter most: who are we most trying to please.
In solitude we remove ourselves from others. Solitude becomes a place of vulnerability and stripping away. It’s a dangerous place, because we come to be seen, known, winnowed by God.
But once the breeze of God’s searching begins to blow through and winnow our life, with what is left we can begin to build and grow a strong inner life that eventually helps us not only stand against the currents of self-seeking, but swim in a new current of freedom and grace.
