“Give us this day our daily bread.” Matthew 6:11
“My grace is sufficient for you.” 2 Corinthians 12:9
No one makes it through any season of life without daily bread/grace. A season is comprised of days, and the daily portion may not seem like much, but it’s entirely what you need to make it through to the next day.
Sometimes our perspective of our trials or struggles needs to change just a little. It’s one thing to look on or at the sun which shines down on all things. It’s another to be in the light of the sun and see all it illuminates. And it’s yet another thing to look along a beam of light and follow it back to the sun.
God alone looks down and shines on all things. We cannot see the whole of anything; we see only in part. By His light, we usually see illuminated the step immediately before or behind us. We can, however, wherever we are on the journey, look back along a beam and follow it back to God.
We can always follow the daily bread/grace back to the Giver. We do not trust the bread/grace to be sufficient, as much as we trust the Giver to give us what is sufficient for our daily needs and trials.
Recently, I was finishing one portion of a workout and looking ahead to the next and the total number of reps it required. There were a lot! But then I heard the coach say in passing not to think of the whole number of reps as much as the individual number of reps that make up the whole.
For example, rather than thinking of doing 40 reps, think of doing 10 reps four times. Or, rather than thinking of doing 3 heavy reps, think of doing 1 heavy rep 3 times.
So, also, rather than thinking of doing 3 heavy days, think of doing 1 heavy day 3 times. It sounds simple, silly even, but our mind and our heart, in a season of trial, can’t take it all in.
When you look at the season you’re in, you’re probably looking at the whole season and how long you’ve been there and how much longer it might last. But there’s no way of knowing. You can, however, look at “today”.
One of the results of struggling and enduring well today is a greater preparation for what lies ahead tomorrow. When we look to Jesus, who himself shares in our struggle and trial, we are made more resilient through him, we are bonded closer to him, and we are made more alive in him. It’s in him that all things—all days and seasons, all struggles and trials— are possible for you. Not all things at once, but one thing at a time.
