Who’s invited to “the table”? We should expect and want unbelievers to be present with us in our gatherings. This is because as the people of God we are “sent ones,” missionaries. We can’t unsend ourselves. We are called to evangelize the lost.
But if we expect unbelievers to join us, they should expect us to welcome them with understanding. Both edification and evangelism can happen together during our Sunday gatherings. To that end, we must work hard to communicate and be comprehensible. The gospel can be lost in translation and with no translation.
In a gathering where worship is comprehensible, something amazing can happen according to Paul: an unbeliever’s heart is laid bare, they are shown their heart by God (1 Corinthians 14:24-25). God is everywhere. Yes. But nowhere like he is among his people gathered together.
