Some of the 5,000 Jesus fed with a few loaves and fish continued to follow him. But Jesus stops them and explains to them that although they were filled, they actually didn’t “see” but missed the sign he performed.
There is a bread that perishes and doesn’t nourish, a bread that nourishes and yet perishes, and a bread that sustains and satisfies forever. This eternal bread is the bread that Jesus came to give: the Bread of Life. But the only way for God to give and for us to receive the eternal life found in that bread is for the Bread of Life to be broken apart.
We can stop working for nothing and instead receive for nothing the life that God offers us: the nourishment, refreshment, and enjoyment of the heart forever. But only if we realize that we are broken and that nothing has nor ever will satisfy the eternal hunger and thirst in our hearts apart from Jesus.
